I'm thinking of buying one. Does it or any detector truly tell you what metal is down there?

  Leaflets

I'm about to start the process of revamping our leaflet. I will probably produce one for the public and one for developers.
If it were up to you, what types of artifacts/sites would you have as pictures on them?

When I look at the smiles on all the children's faces, I just know they're about to jab me with something.

If anyones interested, I just found out that if you'r on the dole you can head off to other EU countries to search for work [u]AND</u>still be paid your benefit!

Mind Boggles on this one but it's EU law. Apparently you can do this for three months before returning (if unsuccessful) after 3 Months.

Ok.The last year has made a few things patently clear. The IFA are not responsible for or, capable of policing optional standards and, Curators simply don`t have the resources to do so. Is this what we call a professional approach to the nations heritage? As a cynic, one could see this pathetic situation as a deliberately moulded environment in which corporate lobbyists maintain their profit margins. Here`s the serious question and, I think it`s time that we started looking at serious answers to it....
What do we do about it?

  Purpose built TROWELS!
Posted by: dave budd - 15th January 2006, 08:25 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (18)

Hello one and all!

First I need to introduce my self.

My name is Dave and I trained as an archaeologist in the late 90's (the old HND in practical archaeology) and went on to fork as a digger for three years until going back to uni to read an MA in Experimental Archy. I now live in Devon making fine tools for craftspeople.

I'm posting here having just read in the Digger that the indestructable WHS trowel has gone to pot and is failing people! I've been thinking for a while that I should start making excavation tools and it looks like now is the time.

Since I am going to start making trowels specifically for digging, I can tailor the design to your needs. They will be made in the smae way as the old WHS trowels, in that they will be a single piece of tool steel that has been forged out and properly heat treated. What I need to know is shall I just make replicas of the original 4" London pattern, or are there any changes that you would have me make?

When I was still digging I replaced several handles straight away on account of the damn things falling off and being too pear shaped for my hands. So the first thing to do would be to make the handles a more ergonomic shape and more securely attached! Also I will make them from wood that has ben oiled and not varnished so that they are more pleasent to use from day one (you can also have trowel handles tailor made if you have large hands or want you initials inlayed!)

Please let me know what your reactions to my suggestion are. Also, if there are any other tools that people would like to have me make, please let me know (I made myself new dental-type tools, leaf and a light one-hand mattock, for example)

  Heritage closures and cutbacks
Posted by: kevin wooldridge - 13th January 2006, 12:19 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (26)

Spending part of today in a local authority records office left me a tad depressed after staff confided their fears that this year's financial settlement could see cutbacks in opening hours and potential job losses. This followed the news about the problems with local authority funded archaeology in Northants and rumours abounding about threats to other local authority units.

A brief trawl of the CBA 'Breaking News' website showed that just today closures have been threatened at museums in Fleetwood, Redditch and Smethwick and councillors in Trowbridge have 'demanded' the closure of a local museum to save a piffling sum off the Council Tax charge.

Is it just my impression or is this the worst year yet for cuts to heritage funding?. Other examples of potential threats would be much appreciated. I am working on an idea of trying to get e-mail addresses to send personal messages of support to beleaguered heritage sector workers to demonstrate they are not alone. If our Host has no objection, perhaps BAJR could become a conduit for advertising local action campaigns against closure or cutbacks.
