Ok.We now know that archaeology is the lowest paid job that a British graduate can enter.We also know that APPAG recommended that archaeology graduates should start on a similar wage to those in similar professions-architects etc.The Figure they suggested was around the ?20 pa mark. In order to maintain an experienced and professional workforce and more importantly, stem the exodus of extremely talented and experienced professional archaeologists-lets show anyone who`s watching just how bad/offensive/contrived the current state of play is.Seeing as APPAG have done nothing since their last statement and, the IFA expect us all to celebrate their new pay scales (whoopee) that completely ignore those recommendations, this thread is all about scanning your local papers/jobcentres etc and posting here advertised pay scales for jobs that are advertised at greater rates than our own.For example, secretarys that process our wages are earning more than we do.Toilet cleaners and car park attendants earn more than we do. Library assistants, Waitrose shelf stackers, cheese graters in warehouses......

Have logged on for the first time in over a week and have found hundreds of posts that I would normally read. Industrial archaeology is as important as any other period when it comes to PPG 16. Plenty of it happens across the UK particularly in the midlands and the north. In short-PPG 16 does`nt really discriminate against industrial arch but then, depends who you ask. "Is there a place for detecting in industrial arch?" You would have to ask someone else at the minute.

G`day. What sort of criteria would you like to see in place? On a jovial note-did`nt a newspaper poll vote Tony Robinson as the most popular archaeologist in the UK? Don`t particularly want to see him heralded as the canines testicles in years to come!!!

I recognise that this is not strictly relevant here but please bear with me.A long standing family friend of mine works with terminally ill children.After a long and deeply moving discussion with her about the minutae of what she does day in day out, I am shamed into action. I shall go straight for the throat here....
Universities have their RAG weeks, commercial companies adopt their own charitable causes. As an industry/profession-what do we do? I hope to galvanise archies in my area into action. I know that we all earn stupidly low amounts and before you run off-I`m not asking for your money. I`m asking for your ideas. As children are our future and we deal exclusively with the past, I propose that the industry/profession adopts childrens charities from here on in. In my area, I aim to raise funds for a local hospice for terminally ill children. So, here`s my questions..
1. Should/could/can we adopt childrens charities as a profession/industry?
2. How can archaeologists/heritage professionals help to raise funds without scooping into already empty pockets?

Thank you for listening-this may seem out of place but, after hearing the nuts and bolts of my friends daily chores, I`m a bit embarrassed to be on here every day belly-aching about what I have to put up with.Love and best wishes to all.
