OK that's interesting-the unit I work for has told me to tell an ex-employee that all she has to do is send a simple letter claiming her pay and it will be payed. I'll let you know how she gets on.

The local government payrise was put off until the union and the management had finished negotiations, when they settled on 2.475%. Not as much as the union was asking for, but more than the nurses got. better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, anyway.

When this was agreed, I think in November, the rise should have been backdated until April. It is certainly possible that the negotiaions will take this long next year.

As for the attitude that people leaving a company deserve to be punished, that would make me uneasy if I were one of the ones still working there....

This sort of thing has happened before. One example I can think of at MoLAS resulted in court action, so might be a very good place to look for legal precedents. I can't remember the outcome, I'm afraid, but I don't think it went all the workers' way. The people at the IFA digger's forum probably know about it, since several of them are London types.
