But what about amateur archaeologists?
What are they subject too and do they also sign disclaimers?

Sorry not much to do with volunteers butit got here somehow

If an archaeologist demanded payment for treasure found on their excavation (using a metal detector or not) could the archaeologist be prosecuted under the Act and if the prosecution was successful would it not have to based on the case that the archaeologist was indeed an archaeologist- whilst if the person had never demanded payment they might not have been an archaeologist….

An individual archaeologist could not demand payment for treasure found on a properly-constituted excavation unless they first stole the object - so they would probably be prosecuted for theft, if caught.

However, in the hypothetical event that an individual archaeologist or a unit was entitled to be in possession of the treasure tried to claim a reward under the provisions of the Treasure Act, they wouldn't be prosecuted - they would just have their application turned down.
