Archaid - drpeterwardle - 2nd March 2007 Are there any situations where "archaeology" and the archaeological planning system should be ignored or given an easy ride? I am not talking about proper sites but the very marginal decisions where it is unlikely that anything is there. PPG16 says grants should for example be available for charities but they are not. Clearly that can be no return to an expectation that diggers work for free for long periods of time. Should we have archaid where archaeologists donate their services on socially good projects? There is a charity called planning aid which does just that for the planning system. Many of the big Units are in fact charities surely they should be willing to take on such projects? I have a specific BIG PROJECT in mind, the opening ceremony was two days ago, so in line with the AUP I canât identify it fully. The curator was curator like but if they had done a bit of research then the need for a planning condition would have been removed or they could have done the watching brief themselves. In the said town, home to a university department, a few consultancies and contractors, and the IFA, within the catchment of the two big charity units, within twenty miles of loads more consultancies; it fell to me to help out, together with another small private sector company. If any of the other managers consultants or even the ifa staff would like to donate to a project building flats for the homeless in their home town they can still do so http://www.bigproject.info/donations.htm Dr Peter Where am I? What motorway are on? Are we on the M4 yet? Archaid - beamo - 3rd March 2007 Peter Just one point - archaeological units that are stlll charities usually hold that status through their commitment to education and have to demonstrate this to the Charities Commission. That does not rule out such units from being able to help out in the circumstances that you are describing, but the educational aspects would have to be promoted. Just because a unit is a registered charity this does not mean that it has resources (staff or other) that can be made available free of charge. Beamo Archaid - drpeterwardle - 3rd March 2007 I would suggest that charities by definition must have the resource for their charitable purpose which could include situations like this. Peter Archaid - 1man1desk - 5th March 2007 Quote:quote:I would suggest that charities by definition must have the resource for their charitable purpose which could include situations like this. The charitable purpose is likely to be clearly defined and specific - it need not include situations like this, although it could. I suspect that a charity that uses its charitable resources to support something not included in its specific charitable purpose might actually be breaking the law. Cancer research charities, for instance, would not be able to support research into diabetes - even though it might be an equally worthy medical cause. That doesn't mean that the big (charitable) units needn't support this kind of situation - but they would need to do it out of their commercial resources, possibly on the basis of 'corporate social responsibility'. Their status as charities would be irrelevant. 1man1desk to let, fully furnished Archaid - Sith - 6th March 2007 I get the distinct impression that Planaid does its charitable work fromt he comfort of a warm office. How many poorly paid diggers are going the expose themselves to the elements in their free time too? Before anyone jumps in, I do know some who do/have donme this kind of thing, but only on local projects that meant something to them. D. Vader Senior Consultant Vader Maull & Palpatine Archaeological Consultants WSIs do not concern me, Curator. I want that site, not excuses Archaid - drpeterwardle - 6th March 2007 As I said "Clearly that can be no return to an expectation that diggers work for free for long periods of time." Peter Archaid - BAJR Host - 6th March 2007 What about some of the Charity Units?? what do they think? "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu Archaid - trowelhead - 7th March 2007 When you said Archaid I thought you ment like a benefit concert for poor archaeologists, who would play I wonder, "COLD"play, MUDDY waters, come on people anymore!! Close enough for a country job! Archaid - Gog - 7th March 2007 VAN Morrison[:p] Archaid - Curator Kid - 7th March 2007 The Levellers? [xx(] |
