Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - garybrun - 19th June 2007 Quote:quote:It's aimed at making troops aware they shouldn't pick up and bring home artifacts and also to avoid causing damage to sites - such as an incident after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, when U.S. troops built a helicopter pad on the ruins of Babylon and filled their sandbags with archaeological fragments from the ancient city. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,,-6718962,00.html http://www.ukdfd.co.uk Recording OUR heritage for future generations. Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - i_love_rocks - 19th June 2007 Too little too late. What a farce! Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - Sparky - 19th June 2007 Perhaps there should be embedded archaeologists as part of the armed forces serving in combat zones. Any offers? Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - Gog - 19th June 2007 The military's lack of empathy with archaeological sites is somewhat ironic given the military background of so many archaeologists - e.g. Pitt-Rivers, Mortimer Wheeler, TE Lawrence, OGS Crawford, Martin Carver. Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - tom wilson - 19th June 2007 Quote:quote:Originally posted by Sparky I'll do it. Can't get much more Rescue Archaeology than that. There's a major (or something) in the US army in Iraq that basically does this sort of thing isn't there? It'd have to be a case-by-case basis. There are some times when it's best for the archaeology to leave it all in the ground and wait for the trouble to blow over, even if there's looting going on (Cambodia, Northern Iraq, Mali). Getting killed isn't really on my agenda either. In another program, U.S. pilots have received training in recognizing and identifying ruins, cemeteries and other sites so they don't accidentally bomb them. That's a nice development. You should see what they did to 'My Son' in Nam. freeburmarangers.org Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - beamo - 19th June 2007 'In another program, U.S. pilots have received training in recognizing and identifying ruins, cemeteries and other sites so they don't accidentally bomb them.' Maybe they could also have some training in recognising other memebers of the coalition forces in order to avoid bombing these. Beamo Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - Sparky - 19th June 2007 In that case, this doesn't give much hope for recognising archaeology. Come to think of it, I know a few archaeologists who'd make the grade as us Pilots. Hosty as Colonel Blake? We owe the dead nothing but the truth. Troops Get Archaeological Playing Cards - gumbo - 19th June 2007 I like the term 'embedded', sounds a bit like they might be dug in to a foxhole! |
