Perhaps there should be embedded archaeologists as part of the armed forces serving in combat zones. Any offers?

The military's lack of empathy with archaeological sites is somewhat ironic given the military background of so many archaeologists - e.g. Pitt-Rivers, Mortimer Wheeler, TE Lawrence, OGS Crawford, Martin Carver.

I'll do it. Can't get much more Rescue Archaeology than that. There's a major (or something) in the US army in Iraq that basically does this sort of thing isn't there?
It'd have to be a case-by-case basis. There are some times when it's best for the archaeology to leave it all in the ground and wait for the trouble to blow over, even if there's looting going on (Cambodia, Northern Iraq, Mali).
Getting killed isn't really on my agenda either.
In another program, U.S. pilots have received training in recognizing and identifying ruins, cemeteries and other sites so they don't accidentally bomb them.
That's a nice development. You should see what they did to 'My Son' in Nam.

Maybe they could also have some training in recognising other memebers of the coalition forces in order to avoid bombing these.

In that case, this doesn't give much hope for recognising archaeology. Come to think of it, I know a few archaeologists who'd make the grade as us Pilots.

What a lovely image.... the 4077th MARS (Mobile Archaeological Rescue Section).. a bunch of slightly disreputable insubordinate enlisted army archaeologists living in 3-man tents (e.g. The Swamp)... you could make a book and a film with a spin-off TV series about it!
