Sounds like you got a thin blade (one of the old new trowels) the new new trowel normally is about 1.5-1.7 mm thick after the thinner ones were found to snap.... (hence the campaign) Of course the old WHS trowel was a whopping 2mm thick... - ah .... them were the days!
Tin foil trowels or tank metal...
