I graduated five years ago and you can count on one hand the number of us still working in archaeology from my year. Most either never started or left after a year or so. Most seem to have ended up in a civil service/ office job or in a call centre!

At present the vast majority of people who read archaeology do something else. This is a reflection of the fact that archaeology is a very popular none vocational degree.
What is interesting is the number of people with a PhD in archaeology who do something totally unrelated to archaeology.

One person I knew from university who did a phd in archaeology involving very hard maths is now earning **** loads of cash doing hard maths for the insurance market in the city. Quite a few others are now accountants. Pretty well all the rest of us stayed in archaeology, although in many cases it does not deliver a good stable job.
