As a 40 a day man and after two failed attempts cold turkey, I used the nicotine chewing gum - I have been chewing it for 2 years 1 month and 2 days (not the same piece I hasten to add). It works through being just like smoking: at first you have to force yourself to get past the nasty chemical taste, but after a month you are truly addicted! And it empties your wallet in the same way... I shall stop using it as soon as I have finished the project I'm currently writing up... unless something else stressful comes along... maybe next month...
Good luck to all ex-smokers!

Last time I smoked (after a particularly stressful day, having up to then given up for two years) I crashed my car. Took that as a warning and hastily quit again - far too expensive and bad for my health [:p]
Best of luck Mr Hosty, it does get easier.

I've just chucked the fags away after realising I smoked four packs over a weekend. Also that I relised I've been smoking longer than my life without them! Also worked out how much it costs over a year (sob). That strange taste is your taste buds trying to remember what they are there for. Avoid seafood- it's like chewing on rusty Iron.
Give me the will power not to kill (except for those who really deserve to be strangled slowly...damn there I go again).

Having stopped smoking 3 months ago I feel I might be able to give a bit of advice. Avoid turning into the shops as you are about to get home because you know you will buy some fags if you do. Also you will find yourself checking the clock from 9 til 10 p.m. thinking that the off-licence will close soon (you will probably go through several phase of thinking 'I will get some' then 'I won't' and on and on). Try to avoid running out of the house at 9.55 to try to buy those fags. Once 10 o'clock has gone you will feel much better. I find that chewing gum helps (not nicotine gum, that's a cop out). Also never buy 10 fags thinking that those will be the only ones you smoke. I've done all of these things. It ought to take a couple of weeks to stop coughing up all that black crap. And your chest might hurt a bit, but that will pass.

17 days fer me chaps. After 25 years and plenty failed attempts I`ve sussed it.My record prior to this was four days and the overwhelming desire to go all apocalyptic and postal forced me to succumb. This time-no patches (mingin sticky filthy squares of delight) and no gum
( truly gopping pus flavoured blue-tac). I managed it by smokin tobbacco and nicotine-free rolling baccy.Thats beat the addiction to old nic.Next trick is to stop feeling it necessary to inhale burning paper/marshmallow flowers/rose petals and some other unknown green sh*te.I can actually breathe now! Full lungs and taste buds on a mission.Cream egg intake has gone horribly horribly awry.
