Well the deadline has 2 more days ... the final count is now over 1825

Given the recent troubles, I am sure the Govt. has other things on its mind.. However...
Rather than create a statement that would be unfair to those that signed, I have suggested that we prepare a statement to reply to the expected reply. The Diggers Forum are putting together a document... as should we.. Not asking for more pay - but aking for support in creating the conditions where a professional archaeologist is seen as an integrated part of any project, like an architect, engineer or geotechnical survey crew... if we have a structured profession, providing a professional service, then the pay follows.... (or should!)

I think that Andrena Crawford initially started the petition over PAY and conditions and I think the letter should include/reflect this (my own oppinion, mind). I take it a copy will be posted on the forum prior to dispatch?

Absolutely... the petition relates to pay, and therefore the reply (or at least the points raised) should reflect that... however jsut asking for more pay... is not going to cut any mustard.. and would be unfair on those that signed the petition (and you would be right that to deviat from that petition would also not be justifiable)
How is the inadequate pay sorted without dealing with the root problems that Govt. can actualy have an effect on?
And yes the docuemtn would indeed be here first for comment, correction and grammatecial fun!

I should bring peoples attention to the synopsis
"...Ensure that Archaeologist be recognized as professionals, and get paid appropriately"
It is this that I feel we must collectively deal with...
To be professionals means looking at what we need to be/do to achieve that, and what help we need to prepare for it.

I see the final number for the petition was 1838.
Not bad when all considered, but still represents less than 50% of our profession .
So.....do the others not care ?
Of do they not follow the BAJR :face-huh:

I think I remember reading that once a petition attracts over 200 votes, the PM may possibly (if its in a month with an 'o' in it) respond; the responses I have seen for the various surveys on the site have been (predictably) non-commital.

RESCUE, BAJR and the DIggers Forum and producing a document (which will be seen here and available for comment/edit) that will suggest viable routes to achieving the aims of the petition... as has been poited out.. we can't jsut hijack the 1800 peoples names and tack on our requests, but we can have a clear and concise suggestion to the Govt on how they can aid us in ensuring Pay and conditions increase... including supoprting training.. providing more robust requiremetns for archaeology in development, supporting joint initiatives with geotech/architectural/development and heritage plans...
so it ain't over yet..

I have to say I dont agree with the sentiments being expressed about government intervention or statements like "So.....do the others not care ?" referring to people who did not sign the petition.
The petition calls for archaeology to be recognised as a profession fine and calls for better pay fine...
but statements like "generally without hope of sick leave or holiday pay." suggest that illegal employment in archaeology is rife.
As to how the state can promote "joint initiatives with geotech/architectural/development and heritage plans..." I fail to see how the state could do this or even what the benefit there would be.
