Unit I'm working for at the mo closes on the 23rd for 2 weeks. Both weeks come out of the 4 weeks annual leave allowance. Seems a bit restrictive on personal choice and preference for when you take time off, especially if you actually have a life outside archaeology ! Dunno how long I will be working there though so might be all a bit academic....
I think I prefer to get paid extra on top of my hourly rate in lieu/advance of paid time off, which is how YAT pays contract diggers. This seems to me to be a more practical solution for people working short-term contracts. You can still take days off but you won't be paid on those days as you've already had the money up front.
