I don't recall the archaeology under Trafalgar Square ever being more than about two metres deep. I did a watching brief when the drains were renewed in the late 1980's although earlier work revealed some Saxon barrel lined wells that went down further. Must admit it was one of the more bizarre experiences, working in an iconic tourist spot with groups of Japanese tourists wanderingin through the site entrance and taking photos of the empy fountains and construction kit before the harassed site construction manager hurtled from his portakabin and chucked them off.
