Blimey. Never mind the IFA, if that kind of thing is still going on without it getting back to the curators, then we might as well all go back to the good old days of rescue archaeology when you got asked to look and paid if anyone could be arrsed.
Obviously the driver thought that it would speed things up/save money for your client if the archaeologists just badgered off, however, maybe you should point out that you need to be there (presumably it's a PPG16 planning condition) and that it costs just as much if you don't find anything.
As for your employer, maybe they should grow a set and speak up. I know times are tight and we'd all like to stay in work but you have to ask yourself why you do what you do. If they don't really care about the archaeological side of being archaeologists then maybe they should think about doing something else like topsoil stripping or building demolition.
