Some thoughts... not all necessarily to do with outdoorsy work
For the environmentalists amongst us... a pack of those paper, yet waterproof lables and a few permanent (black) marker pens (medium and fine).
Furthermore... a plastic trowel or leaf type thingy for removing the muck (peat) off archaeological wood so as not to scar or damage it (although good ole Francis Pryor told me that yer hands/fingers are the best tool to get peat off wood... fine if the context is JUST peat, but if some gravel is included it can be a bit ouchificating)
The leads for those Rotring Tikky Pencils
Balls of string (both cord and plasticated)... and lot's of it! For setting up sections and tying up sample bags.
A pocket calculator.
If yer indoors and doing some pot drawing... window lead strips (great for profiles).
