How about an optical square, for the surveyors amongst us?

OPTICAL RIGHT ANGLE PRISM ALLOWS FOR DETERMINATION OF RIGHT ANGLE POINTS AND PERPENDICULAR POINT BETWEEN TWO TARGETS.
IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE AFTER? NICHE MARKET THAT! ... BET YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE>>>>
[:I] oops sorry for shouting.. but I am not rewriting that... do you know how hard it is to write perpendicual

Some thoughts... not all necessarily to do with outdoorsy work
For the environmentalists amongst us... a pack of those paper, yet waterproof lables and a few permanent (black) marker pens (medium and fine).
Furthermore... a plastic trowel or leaf type thingy for removing the muck (peat) off archaeological wood so as not to scar or damage it (although good ole Francis Pryor told me that yer hands/fingers are the best tool to get peat off wood... fine if the context is JUST peat, but if some gravel is included it can be a bit ouchificating)
The leads for those Rotring Tikky Pencils
Balls of string (both cord and plasticated)... and lot's of it! For setting up sections and tying up sample bags.
A pocket calculator.
If yer indoors and doing some pot drawing... window lead strips (great for profiles).

absolutely. none of our team can do maths, and we're also inept with new-fangled things like mobile phones. And it's no use asking any of the volunteers we work with, cos they're still using the abacus.
Kneeling mats/gloves?
A lot of the work we do it with volunteers, the majority of whom are not in the first throws of youth.
Has anyone mentioned hazard tape? Also those little garden canes (which go together with hazard tape to make reasonable flags for fieldwalking).
