Indeed, Post-med Potterer, and our professional indemnity insurers may have something to say about that as well.
Incidentally do the Scottish small units now employ all their people under PAYE or is it still that 'self-employed' scam (ie not self-employed at all) which used to operate? Just asking, given the moral highground which is being taken in regard to larger units elsewhere on BAJR.

Moral high ground... Moi???
but seriously.... the new document
http://www.bajr.org/Documents/Employed_SelfEmployed.pdf
details in no uncertain terms that the law is the law ... and dodgy practice will not go by the way any more. self employed scam has now been exposed... there are no excuses for it now. the document has been sent to ALL units that advertise through BAJR and those that don't (well thats up to anyone who works for them)
For this to work and for BAJR and the IFA to act on poor practice, we have to be informed with backing information (such as contract details)
Another day another WSI?

Nice one Mr Hosty. Although in my neck in the woods i havent come across any self employed diggers, I can still appreciate the work you're putting in... just hope everybody who needs a bit of advice on this issue gets to see it

And the answer about the smaller Scottish units is?
If they aren't operating employed/PAYE system, then of course 'wages' have to be higher to cover self-provision of holiday, sick pay, insurance (presume all 'self-employed' staff carry their own liability insurance?), tools (because of course they have to provide their own tools), transport (ditto) etc.
Interestingly came across people in Wales recently who wanted to be 'self-employed' because that was how the local unit was happy to 'employ' them...

I am self employed, I was self emplyed in my previous trade before i got into this. Its not all fun I can assure you, the only reason the units in Wales want to employ self employed people is so that they can reduce the workforce instantly when work goes quiet!!

Amazing! I go away for a week and return to find that the thread has been hijacked. I had hoped to start a discussion about which units were the best to work for as a useful exercise in pointing people in the right direction. After all, if we recommend units to work for and people go to those units, hopefully the carp units will be unable to get new staff and will then go under. I must say that I am very disappointed in you all.
