What's an anarchist and can I be one? Oops does that mean I'm an idiot? [:o)]
(Sorry, been reading too much Britarch)
Seriously, I enjoy the chat on here, it gives an insight into the conditions archaeologists have to deal with, quite useful for my degree course, although some may ask how.

Rather depends on what one percieves as anarchists dont it? The free speech enjoyed by the subscriber was won for them by 19th Century British anarchists.British anarchists have ,historically, forged the rights we now hold dear. The individual concerned is clearly oblivious to the wide spectrum of political/spiritual/ideological backgrounds represented by the many subscribers on BAJR.Quite why such an outburst of ignorance broke the surface is beyond me but-it`s an opinion none the less.

Reply from the CBA.
"...regarding the entirely unattributed, unattributable,
secondhand and, put simply, bonkers quote "Maybe the IFA,CBA and
Britarch have it right when they say, (off-list)that bajr is populated by anarchist idiots! ", I think we will be treating such a statement with the disdain it deserves and ignoring it!"

Do I see a flutter of right wing standards on the horizon?
Lets hope the market is working and that the anarchists don't ruin it by advertising jobs on their web site.

Quote:quote:CBA, IFA and Britarch = people who generally think that archaeology is in a reasonable state of health and only minor change is needed.
BAJR = people who generally think that awful wages+contracts, poor health and safety, and unresolved issues at the heart of the profession mean that lots of change is needed.
If that is a fair characterisation (if...) then I know who I support
(posted by Real Job)
I would characterise them all rather differently:
CBA - archaeology pressure group dominated by 'establishment' figures;
IFA - a professional institution trying to represent all parts of the profession (a thankless task, as everyone thinks that everything is their fault, especially when they have nothing to do with it);
Britarch - a discussion forum for looney tunes;
BAJR - a more serious discussion forum trying to address important issues, with a largely grassroots, bottom-up character.
I would say that the CBA, IFA and BAJR all need each other and none of them could achieve as much as they do if the others didn't exist.
I am sure that Britarch is important to its participants, but I can't say I'd notice if it disappeared.

I think Britarch was at one stage quite a sensible and serious list for discussion of archaeology. I am talking of a period about 5 to 10 years ago now when most subscribers were in fact academics, museum archaeologists and other senior professionals (ie. those with email access).
Sadly nowadays it is dominated by largely circular discussions amongst the same regulars. I think the proportion of 'lurkers' to active members is even higher than here. Its format (that of email-based discussion) is now rather old-fashioned and forums (fora?) such as BAJR are more common, and, thankfully more available to a much broader audience.
At its best Britarch provided a forum for "I've recently discovered X what is it?" type of queries to a wide, generally well-informed audience. It still does this, but many of us who would like to contribute to such discussions are put off (and gave up subscribing a long time ago) by endless rants about metal-detecting and such like.
Perhaps there is a role for BAJR to also answer actual research-based questions (I know a few have appeared from time to time) in the way that Britarch used to do?
(As well as continuing its predominant function as a safety valve for the steam built up by hard-working professionals at the various coalfaces of British archaeology, of course!).

Excellent! Look forward to that. In the meantime why not another forum in the main BAJR forums? We have 'Planning Guidance', 'Starting out...' and 'Problems...' (ie. workplace issues), why not 'Notes and Queries' perhaps arranged by period?
Just an idea...
