Ken Denham Wrote:I remember when Carlisle Archaeology went tits up. We'd worked for 3 years on that excavation and another copmpany moved in to do the post-ex. 90% of the staff was made redundant. All the accumulated knowledge that had been incorperated within the firm was dispersed immediately and the academics moved in, who didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
I wasn't working for Carlisle when it folded, but I did work for them in the 90s, and I too was saddened by the loss of local expertise that resulted from the closure. When I worked there, it was still a Council unit, but even then, rumours of a takeover were already circulating.
You know Marcus. He once got lost in his own museum

In reply to Drunky;
So I suppose that stating my opinion about the current state of archaeology, or as you term it "moaning and complaining" is irrelevant? The comment that many archaeologists are spineless and self seeking is derived from personal experience. Maybe your experience is different? I tend to think it may be, possibly because you've decided to forget how bad it can be.
If I was spineless and self seeking myself, I hardly think I would make public statements criticising what I believe to be the truth, let's be honest, it hardly enhances your employment options.
I also consider that your comment regarding that I should " why don't you do some thing usful with your time or are you proving your own statement that archaeologist are spineless and self seeking" (sic) to be personally offensive. Sounds like the pseudonym reflects reality. I also wonder why you think that criticism may be something that is not useful?

In reply to Ken...
just have to keep up with us
What I do is do... and we all could - imagine what we could do if we backed BAJR? Still I will keep doing. Currently challenging RO only lists - Creating the Skills Passport website - preparing for the next salary recommendations - and doing my work Thanks to those that help by the way. But at the end of the day this is about us.
I have someone asking about setting up a self employed company in Cumbria. They are calling the morrow, and I will give the advice they need. not negative but realistic. BAJR FEd is still the best place to get advice. and have a moan. but hell, imagine life without it !

Good for you Bajr, keeping up standards, and I don't just mean archaeological standards. If the IfA spent more time thinking about the former rather than the latter maybe more people would have faith in them. I try to, but it's not easy.
What's a 'self employed company' by the way? If it's another means of driving down prices to there lowest rate yet then the North West of England could do with a few less of those cheers.

Its a tired BAJR
I mean Self Employed Sole Trader. and they will be told that driving down prices is a self destructive act. Hell I will even tell them how much I charge. and to be honest it is often more than companies - but then - I decided to be competitive on product quality rather than price. So far so good. I win some I lose some, but I win enough. (and feel good about myself)

I assumed that's what you meant. If a few more took your example/advice we'd all be in a much better place. Everyone seems to have this idea that since price is what wins it make it as cheap as possible, funnily enough the ones who really take that to heart are likely to be struggling financially some time later... competative doesn't mean cheap.
