but damn sharp when carrying... also the plastic ones don't bend and you don't end up with hundreds of twisted flags! (spaeking from bitter exp.) however... the pvc ones have trouble on tough ground!

We use those little green gardening canes for fieldwalking. With hazard tape wrapped round the top. Simple, cheap, easily repairable.
Drawbacks tho are that they have the same trouble with hard ground as plastic (but not an issue on a ploughed field), and it's a pain if you have to make hundreds of them. They're also not the neatest things to store, but hey if you get sick of them you can always burn them and toast marshmallows over them.
...also splinters add an element of danger. But i've never had one from them. Yet.

Health and Safety risk! Eating too many jammy dodgers can cause diggers to get wedged in the Portacabin, unable to continue work.

Things you need for taking photographs (other than cameras). Photo boards and north arrows appear to have become extinct, and it doesn't look at all pleasing in the report when the beautiful Roman kiln is accessorised with the site code and context number written on the back of a context sheet, and a trowel pointing north. Has anyone any thoughts on the best kind of photo board? I know of three kinds: the peg-board, the hymn-board and the blackboard. The peg-board, generally black, into which you peg little white letters and numbers, is terrifically practical in all weathers and conditions until the pegs snap off the letters, at which point it becomes useless, particularly if the snapped-off pegs get jammed in the holes. The hymn-board, made of plywood, into which you slot the letters and numbers, is sturdier and you can make it yourself; the main drawback is that the numbers are generally printed on cardboard covered with sticky-backed plastic, and tend to blow away. The tiny oblong of blackboard (you can get these as children's toys) is versatile and fits neatly into the camera box, so you don't have to drag it around separately, but is pretty much useless in the rain, and chalk dust in the camera box is looked on with disfavour by those in charge of servicing the cameras (yes, I know this is what old 35mm film cases are for, but there's no telling some people...).

The peg board is definitely the best ! (anyone know of suppliers ?) this gives consistency to all photos for duration of project. (the snapped off pegs can easily be pushed/pulled or drilled out). Chalked letters and numbers are the absolute worst and many a decent photograph has been completely spoilt by these, (who can write consistently and neatly in chalk? never mind in all weathers !! ....also make or buy decent north arrows !!). Another point .keep the point of ranging rods either left or right in all photos of same project.....consistency again.....!!

at my last company we used large white (bathroom) tiles (about 6" square) and wrote on them with wipeboard markers - advantages: don't blow away, not too badly affected by rain (needs to be torrential, and you're unlikely to be on site if its that bad); disadvantages: need neat handwriting! or they look a bit pants, needs to be angled right so the writing shows up (glare from the sun can be a problem)
