In 20 years you might have family responsibilities like elderly parents etc...

it was a tad too robust and personal .

We are told that we are not insured to drive work vehicles if we are not working, yet we drive them without being paid, is this working or not? What happens if we have a collision?

If you are driving ask to see a copy of the terms and conditions of the insurance policy. Do not take someones word for it, a lot of vehicles are hired and you need to understand who is in the line of fire if there is an accident.

Wow, that's a lot of anger towards a complete stranger! And a lot of assumptions too.

No time for this....
Simple... Red Earth should have considered the comment "Here's a mad idea, try moving closer to work?" and seen it as it might be heard.
JSA ... You may have felt justified in the rant, but it was too personal and argumentative
As was the reply.
Dino replied with a quip... and the original statement was directed at him. Remember that.

Absolutely ... get this checked. IF you are not insured to drive the vehicle, when not working then you can't ...... if you are working then you must be paid.

That sounds fair, but what happens say when you are out on an away job and you go to the supermarket after work hours in the supplied vehicle....insured or not insured?

With insurance it will all depend on the terms and conditions of the original policy which might be quite complex. If you have your own vehicle insurance you might find its your insurance that is claimed against if you have an accident.
Read the policy and understand your individual responsibilities. If you are the one who is responsible for driving you may also be the one whos responsibility it is to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive. When did you last check the tyre pressures and oil levels on the works vehicle?
