Job or Vocation?

Well, 'vocation' can mean a lot of different things on a wide spectrum.

Its a job, because we all have to work hard at it to earn a living (decent or otherwise), its hard/nasty/boring at times, and the boss can be unreasonable.

Its a vocation, because most of us choose it out of some degree of real interest in it - a real desire to find out about the past by digging holes in it. Few of us go into it because that's what Dad did, or because there was a job going at the unit down the road and we couldn't think of anything else to do.

Mind you, there have been times when I thought of it more as something akin to a nasty skin disease...

As a devout Atheist I'm not going to attribute it to some higher power. More along the lines of: only a few get to do it, fewer still are any good, and then there's the tiny band who couldn't do anything else because it's like an addiction. That's me.

It's the most rewarding and fulfilling job I've had by a country mile.

Yes, and there are a lot of jobs out there where the pay and prospects are even worse than archaeology!

its an excuse - just about keeps me solvent, but without the hassle of really having to work for a living
