I have been asked to join a list of freelance archaeological contractors by a local authority. I understand that insurance is required to be included on the list. What kind of insurance do I need as a freelance archaeological contractor and roughly what might it cost?

Public liability insurance - in case someone is injured as a result of your activities
Professional liability insurance - in case the client is left severely out of pocket as a result of your professional judgement being found to be completely useless.
Don't know about costs.

As a contractor you will presumably require Employers Liability Insurance as well as Public Liabilty, but if you are only contracting, i.e. not providing professional advice, you may not require Prof Indemnity, I would hazard.
But the documention from the LA will surely detail exactly what insurance is required and the level of cover - otherwise you could take out insurance for your pet's vets bill and righlty claim you have insurance!

Hello David,
Well when I followed the Dark Side I needed professional Indemnity, Public Liability and employers liability. I found that a value of 5 million was sufficient for most jobs although some of the big boys will ask for a value of 10 million - 5 million cost me about £150 per month.
