As I said, the construction contractor was being stingy and wouldn't pay us archaeologists time and a half for overtime. The reason we needed people to watch machines was that the contractor doing the topsoil stripping was working longer hours to 40 per week.

Strangely enough I nearly got strung up by the excavators on my latest job as I didn't want to do overtime.

Seems to be two schools of thought here.....supervisors don't want to do the extra hours (maybe they're getting paid enough to live on anyway), diggers do? :face-stir:

A couple of years ago I was working on a site and we were asked to work (after a full weeks work) on a Saturday to get the site finished. I asked about overtime rates and was told that would never happen. I refused to work the Saturday on those terms and most of the rest of the site backed me.
Guess what? The site was then considered fully completed on the Friday afternoon and we all packed up and left.

I never said I didn't want to do overtime.....I just refuse to do it for less than time and a half as is my right.

I don't think our recent minor influx of polish and scandinavian diggers has anything to do with rates of pay, willingness to put up with bad conditions etc. Everyone is on the same payscale etc. Its just more of em applied?
Don't see how this is being drawn into a racist/not racist conversation...........I suspect one side is over-reacting but the other side is stirring!

....or less guys from this side of the water were interested, which will ultimately start to reduce their options if they're only going to go for 'premium' jobs....I don't like wages being pushed down any more than anyone else (funnily enough that's where my beer and fag money comes from), am just trying to point out some of the sad realities that people in other industries are having to come to grips with - unfortunately unions don't have a good track record at combatting a lot of these, ask the guys at Corus....
Oh, sorry about the stirring, I've been advised by an overseas fan that I'm not using the full range of smiley faces, and would hate to use any innappropriately :o)
