thats it in a nutshell... unless you can show you are innocently looking for services.... you have detector... a spade and a handful of artefacts... looks like intent to me. even without this comment on the forum.... what other purpose would you have for detecting in a channel.... er.. i was looking for my keys yer honour.... it ain't gonna work. though i am sure the french will not notice . don't do it.

Where did I say I would be breaking any law, I said I would be calling in the press to highlight the law is a complete shambles.
Using a metal detector in France is not illegal, there are restrictions on where and how they can be used. The understanding of the law I have is based on a legal interpretation carried out by the law college in Nante and not the skewed interpretation of a DRAC representative.

Its great to see archaeologists living up to their stereo type, don't let the facts get in the way of your rutted opinions and theories. Its ilegal, its illegal I hear, but not one person has referenced the legislation that covers beaches in France or how this legislation is implemented. I could give you links to it, but you are archaeologists. No one expects you to know it straight off, but you should know where to look. So no, find the legislation yourself.

Sorry don't quite have the ferry fare or in fact the ability to read or speak French. Apart from two very useful phrases:

Not guaranteed to help me in most situations. Althought the second phrase I've found is the best chat up line ever in France. Also, coincidentally, I did live with a house mate who originated from Montpellier, and she confirmed that they in fact had an excellent recycling system.
And to be fair, digging a big hole in the beach should be fine - it confuses the French. I did an excavation there and we decided to go to the beach with the site bucket and spades, and as all good British people do, dig THE BIGGEST HOLE POSSIBLE IN THE SAND! The French lifeguard was confused and ran away a bit scared, as we tried to explain that this is perfectly natural behaviour and totally expected in Britain. He just didn't seem to understand.
Anyway, I hope you do dig a big hole on a French beach, and likely find unexploded ordinance. Good luck!
