Traders. Middle men carrying Roman-style goods, not necessarily actually Roman. I'm assuming "Roman" in the wider sense of "from somewhere in the Roman Empire", rather than "from Rome" or "employees of the Roman State".

There were plenty of Roman goods and knick-knacks knocking around south-east and central southern England, before any of the hardcore skirt-wearers actually nanced onto Albion's soil.

Roman goods I'll grant you...doesn't mean they were traded by Romans though. So does that count as a Roman presence? Hmmm...we're going to have to agree to differ. Perhaps influence would have been a better word.

"Nanced" is a good word though...like that.

Every time we explain the concept of fascina to people looking at the glass ones Mike makes, I like to point out that the modern concept of women wearing 'fascinators' in their hair descends from the original term. Cant say that it would be easy to describe but they are not testicles, their balls, no what I mean is the they should be called spherical lumps of gold. Thing is, if you are going to call them testicles then possibly the hollow is an urethra.
