If you are doing the same job as other people who are being paid, and you are given times and days when you are expected to work you are not a volunteer. This idea of gining experience is a way of units sherking the responcability of training staff.
Because units can rely on people volunteering they will not pay someone to do the same job.
And the implimentation of a trainee wage should have helped in this situation but ll that seems to have happened is that the starting wage in archaeology has fallen as many units do not count voluntry experience towards fieldwork.
