I don't mind MIA
I'd love to be an MIA, that is hold the Mountaineering Instructors Award.
Could it be that they want to get more academics etc in to the IFA because now site staff have started joining and getting on council some are worried that all the reactionary office jockeys will get outvoted!!!!

Thinking through the last few posts...in order to accommodate a wider variety of archaeologists into a new IfA, and therefore as Unitof1 suggests the focus upon Field, and so by association, Commercial archaeology would be lessened. I would,
a)hope that the organisation would still be as motivated for commercial archaeologists whilst trying to incorporate the diverse and new methods of work that other archaeological fields follow,
and b) think that as a consequence of this broadened focus that the organisation would presumably become a much larger administration to cater for this increased diversity, in order to maintain (preferably increase) it's ability to represent its membership effectively. But the cost of all this is would be pretty inpressive.

I would say that this is a matter for and between the parties concerned, and (at this stage at least) has little to do with the (or any) institute.

Blimey. Never mind the IFA, if that kind of thing is still going on without it getting back to the curators, then we might as well all go back to the
good old days of rescue archaeology when you got asked to look and paid if anyone could be arrsed.
Obviously the driver thought that it would speed things up/save money for your client if the archaeologists just badgered off, however, maybe you should point out that you
need to be there (presumably it's a PPG16 planning condition) and that it costs just as much if you don't find anything.
As for your employer, maybe they should grow a set and speak up. I know times are tight and we'd all like to stay in work but you have to ask yourself why you do what you do. If they don't really care about the archaeological side of being archaeologists then maybe they should think about doing something else like topsoil stripping or building demolition.

Invisible man, surely a company (who may be an RAO, for all we know) who permits the unrecorded destruction of archaeological deposits, fails to follow their WSI and misinforms the curator is very much a matter for the IFA.
If you really think that it is not their concern; what is the point of even having standards and guidance? When should they get concerned?

How about a radical change to 'The Real Insistute of Field Archaeologists' (RIFA) - or would this put us on the list of potential terror suspects

I should think the vote has been cast by now, today being the day of the IFA AGM. I suspect that the IFA is now officially the 'Institute for Archaeologists'.
Shortly they will move onto the wine reception...
