Work in 2009( part 2)

Now it's February how is the work situation looking ? are things generally picking up ?

Some of the big infrastructure projects in the government's 'economic stimulus package' are starting to come through, and should generate large quantities of archaeological work over the next few months. This is usually work that would have happened anyway, but in some cases not for a year or two and generally spread over a longer period.

Well, there's not much need for infrastructure in Lincolnshire. I look forward to hearing about things picking up.

I would imagine as well that a lot of projects coming in now will be used to consolidate the positions of staff still in work and not lead to an immediate search for new staff. But at least the situation may have stabilised....

Things not looking so good for me at the moment. Few weeks ago we were hopeful the work would continue beyond July but with the recession and the Heritage Protection Bill on ice it's looking doubtful. The curatorial side is beginning to feel the effects too it seems.

Although i'm not holding my breath I hope things do improve soon,as it is Lincoln lost one of its two units on friday-it had been running for 21 years (I was on their first-and unfortunately its last site),I wonder how many companies this recession will claim before a turn-around?

Up here in the not actually frozen or even snowy north of England it's a bit like everyone's gone into hibernation, as while there are still things happening, they seem to be taking an age. The weather to the south is actually holding things up too as post is not getting through relating to some projects - I don't know, there's a bit of snow in London and the whole city takes two days off! Lucky/lazy sods!

My biggest fear is simply not getting paid for work we have already completed rather than not getting anything new. Have already heard that the bank has pulled out funding for a project we worked on last summer or earlier and that we won't therefore see any money for some time. I can only assume this won't be the only case and I know others have been in a similar situation. It's all about cashflow.

Have already heard rumours that one well-established organisation in this region is up against the wall or at least looking for a new home.

As for infrastructure projects - I can't see them being of any benefit to archaeologists in large parts of the country.
