I say Mr. Hosty, - the BAJR minimum for a G7 job is £28,221, so the Wiltshire County Archaeologist job which appeared yesterday which starts at £26,928 should either be removed or amended.
Even the BAJR minimum seems pretty measley for the poor sod who ends up being County Archaeologist for Stonehenge... [xx(]

I have been asked to join a list of freelance archaeological contractors by a local authority. I understand that insurance is required to be included on the list. What kind of insurance do I need as a freelance archaeological contractor and roughly what might it cost?

Hazardous waste on sites |

Just wondering what mitigation procedures should be in place if someone is instructed to work on a site that is awash with used needles. Should the site be cleared by professionals before anyone is asked to carry out excavation, evaluation etc etc. I've been looking at the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Act 2002 but was wondering if anyone one has direct experience of working in this type of environment and what procedures were in place (if any)to ensure the safety of staff on site.Just asking on behalf of a worried collegue.

Heard an interesting comment the other night (on TV) that asking for x-amount of experience in a job advert may fall foul of the new laws as it will discriminate against younger workers within an industry. Cant see it as much of an issue as an employer is going to go for best candidate. But I wonder what the position would be if the best candidate is taken on as they have the most experience?:face-huh:

GIS within Archaeology? |

I am a recent graduate with a degree in GIS (Geographical Information Systems).
I am interested in Archaeology and am trying to find out whether there are GIS jobs within the Archaeology industry?
I would of thought that GIS could become quite beneficial within the field and would be interested to hear from any employers or anyone who can provide any information on the topic, whether it be Archaeology companies that may use GIS, or people who can point me in the right direction to looking into the possibilities of job opportunities.
Thanks a lot, Chris

The Theban Mapping Project announces the publication of the Valley of the Kings Site Management Masterplan on the TMPâs website @ http://www.thebanmappingproject.com
The Valley of the Kings (Wadi Biban el Mouluk) on the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor, in the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a World Heritage site whose archaeological fame and economic importance as a tourist destination are internationally recognized.
The result of its popularity has been a massive increase in visitor numbers over the last decade, now often exceeding 7,000 visitors every day. This number is guaranteed to increase in future years. Without a carefully prepared site management plan, the very existence of this fragile resource could be seriously threatened.
In the spring of 2004, the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) commissioned the Theban Mapping Project to prepare a site management masterplan for the Valley. This project was generously supported by the World Monuments Fund (WMF), and the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), and several private donors.
This âfinal draft for public consultationâ is now available for you to download and we would very much like to have your feedback regarding our proposal for the future of this important site.

Could I get a brief recap/pointer to what the law is on driving to work/site in respect of getting paid for driving time? A link to some official legislation online would be useful. Cheers.
