  Driver Wanted.
Posted by: trowelhead - 21st April 2006, 09:26 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (2)

Heres fun folks I note that OAU are advertising for a:

Driver/warehouse assistant,(assitant not manager), salary ?14,046 - ?15,182 pa.

Below that job OAU is advertising for achaeologists:

Salary ?14,046 (including generous holiday and sick leave pay).

So go to university study hard for a degree get an MA have huge debts come out and get a job as an archaeologist on a wage with less pay structure than a driver/warehouse assitant.

Or perhaps these days you have to have all those qualifications to be a driver, I dunno.

At least he or she keeps warm and dry and goes home every evening.

Tempted!!

BRRMM BRRMMMM

  UCK!!

The conference was great and the 80 shillings was a highlight as was the diggers forum, top notch. However, the dinner was the most horrible menu ever produced by man or woman. Beef stroganoff my Arse! Was it cat or was it dog. The rice looked like it had hung around since the last IFA conference. Perhaps as we archaeologist are underpaid they thought that it would seem amazing. As for the vegetarian option well cow and pat come to mind but then I believe thats what you veggies eat anyhow. Also the nibbles at the wine reception seemed to get scoffed by the academic greedy types.

Pay and conditions! Pay and conditions get yer food sorted first IFA.

  Historic Buildings Liberation Front

Now I know this was published on the 1st of April, however, the Guardian has not said it was a April Fool.

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,...48,00.html

There is also a story in Bedfordshire on Sunday

http://195.74.109.26:2029/news/bedford/2...tewash.lpf

published on the 2nd of April.

What do we all think?

And they are nothing to do with me

  IFA RAO enquiry
Posted by: troll - 17th April 2006, 12:12 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (86)

There is some confusion as to whether a certain unit is, or is not an IFA RAO.I have just attempted to clarify this point by searching the RAO bit on the IFA website with negative results. This particular unit seems to be using the IFA RAO kitemark on their stationary and Mr Hosty believes that they are in fact not an RAO at all.....Mr Hosty???   Performance Related Bonuses
Posted by: drpeterwardle - 16th April 2006, 06:03 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (37)

What the collective BAJR view about the payment of performance bonuses. A good idea to reward hard work or an excuse not to pay a proper wage.

Clearly they would have to be in addition to the basic grade and care would have to be taken not to reduce quality?

  Pay scales
Posted by: trowelfodder - 12th April 2006, 02:32 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (26)

Just a quick few question - with the bajr payscales do you mean that the company has to already be paying its staff at the different levels the recomended bajr minimum in order to advertise, or does it mean that only the jobs advertised have to meet the minmum?

Our company has not yet uped the wages for april and we've wondered how it affects those of us already employed as we have realised that we're paid well under the recomended amounts for our employment level

Newton Rebels

?38k p.a. pro rata 3 month project

We are seeking a suitably qualified, resourceful and imaginative researcher for a 3 month study to explore historical sources and to identify potential ways that the anniversary might be marked.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Steve Hindle of Warwick University who will be a member of the steering group.

Key tasks will include the preparation of a report, and contact with community groups, schools and young people to start planning activities to celebrate the quatercentenary of the uprising.

This post is available immediately in order to ensure that a report will be produced by September.

Newton Rebels is a community based history association dedicated to commemorating the 400th anniversary of the 1607 Newton Rebellion, when 40-50 peasants were massacred in a tiny village in Northamptonshire by landowners in the culmination of the Midlands Revolt. There is currently no record of the event or memorial to those killed.

Another day another WSI?

  Is anyone based in Hampshire?
Posted by: Archpeople - 10th April 2006, 04:35 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (1)

-I am curious to know if any of you know anything about the Dever Valley in Hampshire (the village of Weston Colley to be precise) and the Anglo-Saxon cemeteries based around there?

This would greatly help my project if any of you have any ideas or can suggest any books or websites or have done any geophysics there

  Approaches to bad practice
Posted by: trowelfodder - 10th April 2006, 02:42 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (9)

What exactly is the standard coures of action for reporting misconduct on commercial sites? The work cannot be stopped as has already been destroyed but there is a general discontent amongst those who worked there that this is not an isolated incedent and that it will happen again. Obviously i dont want to talk specifics as it will be really clear which unit is being questioned but where can complaints be made if the coumpany is a trust and houses the county archaeologist (surely a conflict of interest!) The site is a Scedueled monument but on site visits the inspectors were kept seperate from the diggers and basicaly fed a crock of ****.

A group of us (upwards of 50% of the diggers) are planning on writing to the trustees but this is awckward as the unit is the only one concentrating in this area and for many diggers this was thier first commercial excavation and they are scared of not getting further work. I left the company because of this and am prepared to take it as far as i can!

Can we get some advice please! We tried the museum and university and although they agree is appallimg they cannot offer us any hellp! SadSadSadSadSad
