I have to declare that I work at the same place as beer beast and was prompted by him to visit and register on this place and sign the petition for the archaeologist taken hostage in iraq, after doing that i took a good look around and was a little surprised. Have to admit beer has said a load of stuff on here that he'd never come out with at work, always thought he was a liberal democrat. As for the "poll tax riot", and the rest, well you live and learn! - not quite the image of the tight lipped stoney-faced management type that he is in the office but surely his comments here are no worse than anything else I've read written on this web site. I see, after a look at previous messages, that this site was almost sued after the comments of one of its moderators so why so heavy on beer and not the moderator or others who have written equally arsehole quality comments? I aint gonna support what beer said but if people on here are gonna slag him off then there's plenty more who deserve it just as well. By the way beer thanks for six months exile in southampton, i live in oxford you berk, can't you get the bournemouth/Southampton/Poole OA posse to do that site?

I`m loving this muchly. There is a distinct lack of voices from the new generation of archaeologists. I think that the points raised here are incredibly important. In terms of providing rocks with a coherent response, I`m going to have to think long and hard over a few ciggies before I offer my thoughts. Thank you Rocks!!Big Grin

Couple of good friends of mine came up with this a couple of nights ago...
The Tank

Large glass box. Team of archaeologists create fills/cuts/pits/recuts etc recording what they do as they go.Tank is filled with such to the top. In a "back to the shop floor" spirit, MIFA types get to excavate it single context. Everyone else gets to watch through the glass sides.Interpretations/methodologies are aired during the process. Similarly, PIFA types don`t get away with the potential humiliation either. The more we thought about this, the more we wet ourselves........so, over to you.Design an archaeology reality show.........Big Grin

Something a bit shocking though-not one of them I nattered with had even heard of the good old BAJR! Whats goin on? Jobs, resources, links, opinions and of course-all the material one needs for an assignement on professional studies taboot! Methinks it`s high time that BAJR became a household name amongst the new generation of archies and heritage professionals.

I keep trying to spread the word down here but my one contact with an archae student shows they may not have a lot of time. Essays every two weeks to hand in and masses of reading to do. Then they have an exam next week as well as exams in January. (Glad I'm not studying archaeology Big Grin )
I will try to spread the word up in Lampeter if I get the chance.
I'm not sure if anyone on my course is into heritage yet but I'll tell them about BAJR just in case. Big Grin

As a member of the dark sith and being somewhat new to the dark side I have been tasked with the Procurement of a project and this has left me a little confused. Does Procurement entail aquiring the site from the owner for the project or is procurement the act of organising the tender for sub-contraction to a number of units. Any help from more wizned sith lords would be very much appreciated.

  United Kingdom Detector Finds Database
Posted by: garybrun - 6th December 2005, 04:10 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (13)

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk

I should like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to explain a little about the UK Detector Finds Database (UKDFD).

You may have heard about this initiative and be aware of some of the criticism being levelled at it. The formation of the UKDFD has understandably raised a number of questions, and I should like to address some of these by offering some first-hand factual information.

My name is Gary Brun and I have a long record of active support for the PAS. That support continues because I firmly believe that the voluntary recording of detecting finds is in the best interests of everyone, not least the hobbyists themselves. I am also a founder member of the UKDFD scheme. I see nothing inconsistent in my support for both of these schemes; in fact I believe that each plays an important part in encouraging the recording of finds. This is a view shared by all of us involved with the UKDFD, and it was with the intention of increasing the level of recording that the scheme was established.

The UKDFD seeks to encourage recording among detectorists who currently, for whatever reason, choose not to record their finds elsewhere. It also facilitates the recording of certain types of find not eligible under the current scope of the PAS. It is certainly not in any way designed to compete with the PAS - quite the contrary - recording through the PAS is actively encouraged. The UKDFD is also endeavouring, subject to the consent of recorders, to make its records available for direct transfer to the PAS.

I believe the UKDFD is an honourable and extremely worthwhile venture and I wanted to present you with the facts first hand.

Gary Brun

Bad idea.

Archaelogical work on development sites should not be paid for from the public purse, it should be paid for by the developer. Otherwise, we (the taxpayers) are subsidising developers to trash the archaeology. That's a bad thing in itself, but even worse because it removes any incentive for them to reduce their impact on the archaeology. I know (because I work with them regularly) that they often do feel an incentive to do that as things stand.
