Mutuals do make profits, it is just that their members are also their shareholders. All my money is in mutuals, but all my pension fund is probably not (boo).

My last job was with a mutual. It was no less cut-throat or amoral than any of the profit-making organisations I worked for. The City wing of investment bankers was particularly obnoxious. Mutual status does not make a company decent, moral or a good employer. If we're looking for a better type of corporate governance and management style coupled with profit-making, John Lewis/Waitrose is probably a good direction to look.

Is that a hint of cynicism I detect Unit? I'm very disappointed, I never had you pegged as a disenchanted archaeologist.
And this next point is probably related to the 'How should British Archaeology be Run' thread but how about an excavation unit run as a workers co-operative? All workers as shareholders? Might work if they could all stop arguing with each other . . .

I remember a meeting with a senior manager of a large archaeological unit seeking to distance itself from its founding institution. Said manager had given us the 'vision' off a rosy downsized future for an equity funded shit-hot enterprise minded archaeological business. '...But ' I suggested, 'there are other models for running a business. A co-operative for example'.....'And what bank would be willing to loan enterprise funding to a co-operative?' asked the manager.....'er the Co-operative Bank' I suggested. Look of disdain overcomes said manager....

and this is where I tell, you about the wonderful world of where each individual worker keeps hold of their copyright. That's the definition of co-0Yperive.
